Uh, what is Enterprise Architecture?

Why ask the question?  Clearly, there are too many definitions of Enterprise Architecture.  Wikipedia describes it as a “…a term…that refers to many things.”

I prefer to keep the definition as simple as possible.  And, like any good Enterprise Architect, I will decompose the problem domain in order to solve it.

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, “enterprise” is a unit of economic organization or activity, especially a business organization.  According to ANSI/IEEE Std. 1471-2000, “architecture” is the “fundamental organization of a system, embodied in its components, their relationships to each other and the environment and the principles governing its design & evolution.”

Thus, combining the 2 terms enterprise architecture, a practical definition:

Enterprise Architecture is the fundamental organization of an [enterprise] embodied in its components, their relationships to each other and the environment and the principles governing its design & evolution.
